Indirect dental restorations such as crowns, bridges, inlays, onlays, or veneers are those that are fabricated outside of the mouth and then cemented in place. In most cases, indirect restorations are fabricated by a dental laboratory according to your dentist’s specifications. Because of the fact that dental laboratories are not on-site, this means that two dental appointments are required to place an indirect restoration.
Same-day dentistry, on the other hand, allows indirect restorations to be offered to patients the same day as their appointment. This is possible because same-day dentistry uses CAD/CAM technology to scan the mouth and then fabricate the necessary restoration from a variety of dental materials.
Did You Know?
CAD/CAM technology is becoming increasingly popular in dentistry. CAD stands for computer-aided design, while CAM stands for computer-aided manufacturing. Using this technology allows your dentist to provide permanent restorations with a single visit, without the use of conventional dental impressions, and at a lower cost than traditional restorations.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Am I a candidate for same-day dentistry?
You may be a candidate for same-day dentistry if you are receiving restorative and/or cosmetic dental treatments that require the use of crowns, bridges, inlays, onlays, or veneers. To determine if you are eligible for same-day dentistry, schedule a consultation with Dr. Sanket Upadhay of Birch Point Dental Clinic today.
What can I expect when having same-day dentistry at Birch Point Dental Clinic?
When having same-day dentistry, you can first expect to have your mouth numbed in order to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Once your mouth is numb, Dr. Sanket Upadhay will begin by preparing the affected tooth for the desired restoration. This usually consists of removing any decayed or damaged tissue, and then reshaping the tooth to accommodate the restoration. After the tooth has been prepared, an oral scan will be taken of your mouth. The information obtained during the oral scan is then uploaded to an in-office milling machine that will fabricate your restoration while you wait. In most cases, it takes a little over an hour to have your restoration completed. During this time, you have the option of waiting or touring the neighborhood and returning at a later time.
What can I expect after having same-day dentistry?
After having a restoration placed with a same-day dental appointment, you will be able to return to your normal routine and diet. Since same-day dentistry appointments provide you with your permanent restoration, you will not need to follow any special guidelines like you would while wearing a temporary restoration. However, you will still need to care for your restoration by brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting Birch Point Dental Clinic twice a year for cleanings and dental exams.
