Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide sedation, also known as Laughing Gas, is a mild form of dental sedation used to relieve dental anxiety. It is a colorless, odorless gas that is inhaled through a mask that fits over the nose. The gas is effective seconds after being inhaled and helps you to relax, while keeping you both conscious and responsive. It also produces feelings of euphoria, which is why it is commonly known as Laughing Gas.

Did you Know …

Nitrous oxide (Laughing Gas) was first synthesized in 1722, however it was not used for dentistry until 1844 when Horace Wells used it to demonstrate its anesthetic properties during a tooth extraction.

You may be an ideal candidate for nitrous oxide sedation (Laughing Gas) if you have dental anxiety, have had a bad experience in the past, are undergoing a long or invasive procedure, or have a sensitive gag reflex. However your health, age, and current medications will need to be evaluated before deciding if nitrous oxide sedation (Laughing Gas) is right for you. What can I expect when receiving nitrous oxide sedation (Laughing Gas) at Birch Point Dental Clinic?

When receiving nitrous oxide sedation at Birch Point Dental Clinic, you can expect to first have a small mask placed over your nose. At first, oxygen will flow through the mask, then nitrous oxide (Laughing Gas) will be added in slowly to help relax you. As the gas begins to take effect, you will feel somewhat euphoric and calm. If you feel lightheaded or dizzy, you can ask that the gas be turned down. Although you will be aware of what is happening around you and able to answer questions, you will not feel anxious or be bothered by anything. Nitrous oxide (Laughing Gas) also has an anesthetic effect, meaning that you will not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure.

What can I expect after receiving nitrous oxide (Laughing Gas) sedation?

One of the best things about nitrous oxide sedation is the simple fact that it wears off almost immediately after being inhaled. This means that there are no long-term lingering effects of the sedation. This also means that you can drive yourself home after your procedure and will have no special instructions to follow. However, Dr. Sanket Upadhyay may provide you with special instructions related to your specific treatment.
