Digital X-Rays

Digital x-rays are low-radiation dental x-rays that allow Dr. Sanket Upadhyay to take a closer look at the health of your teeth and jawbone. They are a key component of semiannual dental exams because they can allow your dentist to notice cavities or other dental problems that would normally not be visible, such as cavities between the teeth or impacted wisdom teeth. In order to get the best view of your teeth, multiple images are usually taken.

Did You Know?

Digital x-rays emit 80% less radiation than traditional x-rays. For this reason, they are considered to be safe when conducted 1-2 times per year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have digital x-rays?

Digital x-rays are generally required at least one to two times a year in order to monitor your oral health. In some cases, they may also be used to diagnose potential dental issues or to help your dentist create a treatment plan. To get your teeth checked with digital x-rays, schedule a consultation with Dr. Sanket Upadhyay at Birch Point Dental Clinic today.

What can I expect when having digital x-rays taken at Birch Point Dental Clinic?

When having a digital x-ray taken, you will first need to remove any metal jewelry or accessories. You will then be provided with a lead apron and possible neck collar to minimize the amount of radiation exposure. You will then be asked to sit or stand by the x-ray machine and hold your mouth in certain positions. This is because there are different views that your dentist needs to evaluate. These include:

  • Occlusal: shows how your upper and lower teeth line up when your jaw is closed and captures all your teeth in a single x-ray.
  • Bite-Wing: focuses on the upper and lower teeth in one area of the mouth. This type of x-ray is used to detect changes in bone density as well as decay between the teeth.
  • Periapical: focuses on a small portion of the upper or lower jaw and shows the entire tooth from crown to root. They are used to detect problems with the roots or surrounding bone structure.

When will I get the results of my x-rays?

Besides using less radiation, the other great thing about dental x-rays is that your dentist will immediately have access to your x-rays. This means that Dr. Sanket Upadhyay will be able to go over your results with you during your dental exam. He will then answer any questions you may have.
