Dentures

Dentures are partial or full sets of fake teeth. Partial dentures are used in cases where there are multiple missing teeth and some remaining natural teeth. They are fabricated to fit around the remaining teeth to remain in place.

Complete or full dentures are used in cases where an entire arch of teeth is missing or is in need of extractions due to severe damage or decay. They are fabricated to sit on top of the gums and use suction to remain in place. Both types of dentures are made using an acrylic base, however some variations of partial dentures may also use a metal framework.

Did You Know…

Dentures are one of the most well-known tooth replacement options. In fact, they have been used for thousands of years by various civilizations. While they used to be made from animal bones and teeth, ivory, or wood, dentures are now fabricated using quality dental materials that have an aesthetic appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Am I a candidate for dentures?

You may be a candidate for dentures if you have one or more missing teeth. You may also be a candidate for dentures if you have one or more teeth that are severely damaged or decayed and are in need of extraction. If you have remaining natural teeth, then you are a possible candidate for partial dentures, however if you are missing all your teeth, then you are a possible candidate for complete dentures. To determine if you are an ideal candidate for dentures, schedule a consultation with Dr. Sanket Upadhyay at Birch Point Dental Clinic today.

What can I expect when getting dentures at Birch Point Dental Clinic?

When getting dentures at Birch Point Dental Clinic, Dr. Sanket Upadhyay will first examine your teeth and gums to determine if there are any remaining teeth that need to be extracted before having dentures placed. In the case that an extraction is needed, the extraction site(s) will need to heal before continuing the process. In cases where an extraction is not needed, then Dr. Sanket Upadhyay will begin by fitting you for dentures.

A dental impression will be taken of your mouth and then used to fabricate a denture prototype. These prototypes are generally made from wax so that adjustments can be made to ensure a proper and comfortable fit. After adjustments are made, hot plaster is poured into the wax mold and used to create the permanent denture. The entire process usually requires multiple dental appointments.

What can I expect after having dentures placed?

Since dentures function differently from natural teeth, you can expect a period of adjustment after having your dentures placed. For the first few days or weeks after having your dentures placed, you may experience excess saliva production, gum irritation, and problems with eating and speaking. This is normal and it should improve after the first month, once you start to acclimate to your new dentures.

Dr. Sanket Upadhyay will also provide you with information on how to care for your dentures. Generally, these instructions consist of removing your dentures every night to allow your gums to rest. It is also important to remove your dentures nightly in order to properly clean them. When your dentures are not in your mouth, however, you will need to prevent them from drying out by storing them in a glass of water or denture solution. Keeping your dentures wet allows them to maintain their shape, while letting them dry out can cause their shape to warp.
